Personal Brand Construct: 6 Steps to Professional Clarity
In an era of endless feeds, media saturation, and a crowded marketplace of voices, a personal brand isn’t vanity; it’s clarity. It’s your professional operating system.
𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆.
Before you dive into posting or podcasting, you need a “Brand Construct.” This is the exact blueprint I use for myself, and when advising leaders to ensure their external voice matches their internal reality.
Here is the methodology to build yours:
𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿): Don’t just state what you do. Define the specific impact you want to have. Why does your work matter to others?
𝟮. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲): How do your disparate skills intersect? (e.g., Where does AI meet Governance and Marketing?) This is the narrative anchor that separates you from generalists.
𝟯. 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 & 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀): Use tools like StrengthsFinder and value cards, but go deeper. How do your values dictate your behaviour when things get tough? These are your non-negotiables.
𝟰. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 & 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗲 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹): You cannot be known for everything. Clarify the 3 to 4 topics you will own authentically. Choose a tone. Examples: witty, direct, encouraging. Something that sounds like you in a meeting room or professional setting.
𝟱. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 & 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁): Stop broadcasting and start narrowcasting. Are you speaking to VC founders, enterprise CXOs, or builders? Shape the content to solve their specific headaches.
𝟲. 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 & 𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 (𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻): Use past achievements and professional milestones as credibility proof-points, but always keep the endgame in sight. What durable legacy are you building?
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲. The introspection required to build it is not. Since we have some downtime before we get busy with 2026, I would highly recommend dedicating a few hours to building this if you want to be intentional about what you want to achieve with your personal brand.
If you want a concrete example of what a finished, workable “Personal Brand Construct” looks like in practice, I’m happy to share mine.
