Unlocking Potential: Leadership and Empathy in Tough Times

A Personal Reflection as I turn a year older this month.

Unlocking Potential in Others in Tough Times

Forgive me if this may come across as preachy, but this post is as much a reminder to myself as it is a thought to share with all of you. Reflecting, I have been blessed with family, friends, leaders, and even strangers who have given me a chance, a nudge, or an opportunity when I needed it the most. And many times this help has come unconditionally. So thank you all for making a difference in my life. You know who you are.

We live in a deeply fractured world right now. The economy is tough, layoffs are frequent, we agree on very little, new graduates are struggling to find their footing, and senior workers are having a hard time keeping their careers going. In times like these, it’s natural for all of us, myself included, to focus on self-preservation and get caught up in our own responsibilities and worries.

But I’ve been reflecting on the people that I still see continue to make a difference. It seems these people have come to understand one key philosophy of life. One of the greatest joys and responsibilities we have is unlocking the potential in others. Whether that means creating a helpful introduction, supporting someone’s career journey, being a customer to their new or struggling business, connecting people who can help each other grow, or just being a listening ear and present. These are small acts of lifting others that can be done in any life situation you are in right now; there is always someone who needs your care and support, and we can all do it from wherever we are in our journey.

I remember a leadership conference I attended at Intel Corporation in 2019, where the speaker was Steve Farber, author of ‘Greater Than Yourself.’ The idea was simple yet profound: think beyond yourself and empower others to achieve even greater things. It’s a concept I’m still learning to practice, and it’s a reminder to myself to double down on helping others, especially when times are tough. I was clearly impacted by the message, and below are the blurry screenshots I took from a few rows back.

So let’s keep lifting each other up. We all need each other, and sometimes the best way to navigate a fractured world is by helping someone else piece their path together
