Introducing the CMO AI Readiness Assessment: Find Out Where Your Marketing Organisation Really Stands on AI

AI

If you've sat through a board presentation recently where someone dropped the phrase "AI-first marketing" and nodded along while quietly wondering what that actually means for your organisation, you're not alone.

The reality is that most marketing leaders are somewhere on a spectrum between "we've got a ChatGPT subscription" and "our AI systems are making real-time budget decisions." The gap between those two points is vast. And right now, most organisations have no clear way to know exactly where they sit, what's holding them back, or what the most valuable next move is.

That's precisely why we built the CMO AI Readiness Assessment.

What Is It?

The CMO AI Readiness Assessment is a free, structured diagnostic tool built specifically for senior marketing leaders. It takes approximately 8 to 10 minutes to complete. It delivers an instant, personalised score with a tailored strategic roadmap - no email required, no data stored, and no sales call needed to see your results.

It is not a quiz. It is not a gimmick. It is a structured framework built on the same diagnostic logic we apply when working with organisations on AI strategy engagements - translated into a self-serve format so any CMO can access it at any time.

The assessment is live now at aideatesolutions.com/cmo-ai-assessment.

How It Works

The tool evaluates your organisation across six critical pillars of AI marketing maturity:

1. Strategy & Vision: Do you have a documented AI marketing strategy? Is it resourced? Does Leadership actively champion it, or is it sitting in a slide deck from last year's planning cycle?

2. Data & Infrastructure: AI is only as good as the data it runs on. This pillar examines your first-party data quality, whether you have a unified customer data layer, how your data sources are integrated, and the maturity of your privacy and consent management approach.

3. Team & Culture: Technology is the easy part. This pillar looks at whether your people have the skills, the appetite, and the cultural permission to experiment with AI - and whether your organisation rewards or penalises failure.

4. Technology Stack: Are your existing martech tools actually being used for their AI capabilities? Have you deployed any generative AI in a structured, governed way? Or are individuals quietly using consumer tools with no oversight?

5. Content & Personalisation: From AI-assisted content creation to 1:1 personalisation across channels, this pillar assesses how advanced your content and customer experience programmes are becoming with AI.

6. Measurement & ROI: Can you actually measure the return on your AI marketing investments? Do you have AI-powered attribution, predictive forecasting, or real-time dashboards? Or are you still arguing about last-click?

Each pillar is scored individually, giving you a granular view of where you're strong and where the gaps are - not just an overall number.

The Scoring Engine

The assessment covers 40 questions - 7 for Strategy & Vision and 6 for each of the remaining pillars. Every question uses a five-point scale, from early-stage to frontier capability.

Your responses feed a 100-point scoring engine that calculates both an overall AI Readiness Score and individual pillar scores. The algorithm then places you into one of four readiness tiers.

The Four Readiness Tiers

AI Observer (0-24): Your organisation is in the early awareness stage. AI may be discussed, but it hasn't been systematically integrated into marketing operations. This is a critical inflexion point - the organisations that formalise their approach now will quickly build compounding advantages.

AI Explorer (25-49): You've begun experimenting, but individual efforts aren't yet coordinated into a programmatic capability. You have the right instincts; what's needed now is governance, infrastructure, and a clear roadmap to scale what's working.

AI Practitioner (50-74): AI is meaningfully embedded in several areas of your marketing operation. You have strong foundations, but there are significant opportunities to deepen integration, close personalisation gaps, and advance your measurement sophistication. You're in the top quartile - the question is how to close the gap to Leadership.

AI Leader (75-100): Your organisation operates at the frontier of AI-powered marketing: strategy, infrastructure, talent, and measurement compound into a genuine competitive advantage. The challenge now is maintaining that position as the landscape continues to shift.

What You Get Instantly

The moment you complete the assessment, the algorithm generates:

  • Your overall AI Readiness Score out of 100

  • Your tier placement with a full summary of what it means

  • A pillar-by-pillar breakdown with an individual score and interpretation for each of the six dimensions

  • A prioritised recommendations list tailored specifically to your tier - not generic advice, but the actions most likely to move the needle from where you are right now

  • A gap analysis highlighting your three weakest pillars, so you know where to focus first.

Everything renders instantly on the page. There is no waiting, no email confirmation, no gated PDF. Your results are yours immediately.

Why Did I Build This

As a marketer myself, I am navigating one of the most significant shifts in the discipline's history. The organisations that get AI right will build advantages that are genuinely difficult to replicate. Those that don't risk falling structurally behind, not just in efficiency, but in the quality of insight, personalisation, and decision-making that their competitors will operate with.

The problem I keep hearing is the same one: "We know we need to do more with AI. We don't know where we actually are, or what we should prioritise."

Most AI assessments I've seen are either too generic to be useful, too superficial to be honest, or locked behind a sales process. I wanted to build something that any CMO could access in ten minutes and walk away from with a genuinely useful picture of their organisation's position.

The assessment applies established AI-readiness and marketing-maturity frameworks. It is, by design, a benchmarking tool. It will not tell you everything; every organisation's context is different, and specific industries, business models, and market dynamics all shape what AI maturity looks like in practice. For that reason, the tool includes a clear disclaimer: the output is indicative, not prescriptive, and does not constitute professional advice. Where bespoke guidance is needed, that is what I am here for.

But as a starting point, a structured, honest mirror, I think it does something genuinely useful.

How to Use Your Results

Whether you score 18 or 82, the value of the assessment is in what you do next.

If you're an Observer, resist the temptation to jump straight to tools. Start with governance: an internal champion, a clear use-case shortlist, and a data audit. Quick wins from activating AI features already buried in your existing martech stack can deliver early momentum.

If you're an Explorer, the priority is formalisation. Your experiments are working - now they need a framework, a budget, and executive alignment to scale. An AI Centre of Excellence, or an equivalent internal structure, makes the difference between scattered pilots and a programmatic capability.

If you're a Practitioner, the gap to Leadership is about depth and integration. Personalisation at scale, AI-powered attribution, proprietary data advantages, and specialist talent are the levers that separate the top quartile from the top decile.

If you're a Leader, the work is about maintaining the position. Proprietary model development, thought leadership, agentic AI workflows, and staying ahead of regulatory changes are where the frontier is moving.
