How Big Tech Shapes the Future of AI

AI

Tuesday night at the LinkedIn Localโ„ข - Singapore event at SGInnovate, we had a fantastic deep dive into how Big Tech is shaping the AI landscape and what that means for all of us.

We heard from LinkedIn Top Voices Tianyu Xu and Impact Investor Maya Hari. The session was wonderfully moderated by CNBCโ€™s John Patrick (JP) Ong, who posed pertinent questions to the two panellists. They tackled everything from the importance of mastering AI tools rather than letting them master you to Augmentation vs. Automation to the economic and societal implications, the evolving skill sets needed, and the big-picture challenges of compute, data, energy, and sustainability.

The conversation touched on human ingenuity. As Tianyu put it, โ€œMaster the tool; donโ€™t let the tool be your master.โ€ There was a lively debate on augmentation versus automation, where Maya leaned in on how, even as AI augments our work, we need to consider the inevitable shifts in the workforce and the role of ethics and regulation.

Maya, with her deep experience in Big Tech, emphasised that technology investments must deliver both profit and purpose. We need leadership that ensures AI serves everyone, not just the few. Human agency and leadership must remain central.

The answer to whether new roles will be created at the same pace as those displaced by disruption is definitely unclear. But that shouldnโ€™t stop us from embracing and learning new skillsets as they seem set to redefine how we work.

In short, it was a night full of thought-provoking discussions, all about keeping our approach to AI flexible, curious, sustainable, and focused on human creativity. And of course, met some interesting attendees and made new friends and connections.
